Record youth turnout, especially of BIPOC youth, as well as the hard work of organizers fighting for climate, economic and racial justice handed a victory to the Democrats in November and again in January in Georgia. Now, Democrats must deliver on a legislative agenda that represents these values. We gathered to tell Chuck Schumer that there can be no compromising on this agenda and especially no compromise with those who aid the subversion of democracy.

After days of sustained nationwide protest honoring the life of George Floyd, the Sunrise Movement’s NYC Hub endorses five state legislative candidates committed to criminal justice reform, policing overhauls, and a Green New Deal. Sunrise NYC endorses State Senators Jessica Ramos and Michael Gianaris (Queens), Assembly Member Dan Quart (Manhattan), and Assembly candidates Jessica González-Rojas (Queens) and Marcela Mitaynes (Brooklyn).
Sunrise NYC and AOC call for Green New Deal
On Monday June 1st 2020, Sunrise NYC leader Day Bradshaw joined AOC and Varshini Prakash in calling for a Green New Deal that serves intersectional justice. Their conversation discussed Sunrise’s response to white supremacy and racism, and how a Green New Deal can directly address the economic and environmental injustices faced by Black and brown communities.
A Letter to Biden on Earth Day 2020
This letter was originally written to be published on Earth Day 2020 — exactly 3 weeks ago. Since then, Joe Biden’s campaign has made some positive steps with its climate platform: namely the formation of the new Sanders-Biden Task Force on Climate Change, which Varshini Prakash, the Executive Director of the Sunrise Movement, has announced that she is accepting an invitation to join today. We have decided to publish this letter today to make clear our disappointment with Biden’s record on climate thus far, and to share our hopes for how his platform might change with the input of our fearless Green New Deal advocates on the task force. On Mayday, May 1 2020, workers faced a new challenge: the coronavirus pandemic. In partnership with the Movement School and Housing Justice 4 All, Sunrise NYC members organized a #CancelRent action. The action focused on gaining rent release for NYCHA tenants, and included a banner drop from the Queensboro bridge and complementary digital actions.
