Sunrise NYC is a community of young people fighting for a livable future

We’re young New Yorkers from all walks of life advocating for a Green New Deal and the elected officials who champion these values.

By organizing locally in our globally influential city, we’re making NYC a leader in the national fight against climate change.

WHAT WE DO

Protests & Demonstrations

We take to the streets to demand action on the climate crisis. Through rallies, sit-ins, marches, and creative direct actions, we keep pressure on politicians and corporations, making it impossible for them to ignore our demands. We also use storytelling and media—from viral videos to bold visuals—to amplify our message and inspire others to take action.

Advocacy & Political Action

We fight for climate justice at every level of government by pushing for policies that protect people and the planet. Our members work on endorsing candidates, researching and drafting climate legislation, and holding elected officials accountable. We also build digital tools like legislative trackers and online campaigns to help people stay engaged in the political process.

Community Organizing

We grow our movement by bringing in new members, running trainings, and building the skills needed to win. Whether it’s planning local actions, hosting educational events, or mobilizing people for major campaigns, our strength comes from collective power. We use online platforms and social media to reach more people and ensure our movement is accessible to all.

RECENT ACTIONS

CBS Protest

The morning before the 2024 U.S. vice presidential debate, six members of the youth-led Sunrise Movement were arrested for blocking a street outside CBS News in New York City. The Sunrise activists demanded that moderator Norah O'Donnell ask candidates about their plans to address the fossil fuel-driven climate crisis, especially in light of Hurricane Helene's devastating impact, which left at least 137 dead. During the debate, Vice Presidential Candidates were indeed asked about Hurricane Helene and the influence of climate change.

Canvassing during 2024 Elections

Throughout the 2024 election season, Sunrise Movement members hit the streets to knock on doors, make calls, and mobilize voters for climate champions. One of our key endorsements was Jamaal Bowman, a bold advocate for climate justice and the Green New Deal. Our hub members canvassed to support him and other progressive candidates who reject fossil fuel money and fight for a livable future.

Summer of Heat

2024 was the hottest year on record. In the summer of 2024, as climate disasters escalated, Sunrise Movement NYC joined the Summer of Heat campaign and protested against major financial institutions fueling the crisis. Through civil disobedience actions and mass protests, we called out Citibank and others for their fossil fuel investments.
